What is the CRM test?

Why contact resistance matters
Every time a breaker opens under load, an arc burns a little of the contact surface. Over years the contact face becomes pitted, oxidised or misaligned, and the resistance climbs. Because heating follows the I²R relationship, even a small rise in resistance produces a large rise in heat when hundreds or thousands of amps are flowing.
That heat then makes the problem worse. A hot contact oxidises faster, the resistance climbs again, and the cycle repeats. Left alone it ends in a hot spot, a tripped feeder, a damaged breaker or, in the worst case, a flashover inside the panel. Thermography can find a hot joint only when the equipment is loaded; the CRM test finds a weak contact before it ever gets hot.
- Commissioning. A baseline reading is recorded for every new breaker so future results have something to be compared against.
- Routine maintenance. The test is repeated at each shutdown and trended over time.
- After a fault. A breaker that has interrupted a heavy fault current is tested before being put back in service.
- After overhaul. The test confirms that contacts were reassembled correctly and torqued properly.
How the CRM test is performed
The exact procedure comes from the equipment manual and the site’s own safety rules. Broadly, the steps run like this.
- Isolate and make safe. The equipment is switched off, isolated, locked out, discharged and earthed. Nothing is connected until the permit-to-work is in place.
- Remove the earths from the test section. Earth connections across the contact under test are removed, otherwise the current finds a parallel path and the reading is wrong.
- Close the breaker. The contact must be fully closed and latched, because the test measures the closed contact.
- Connect four leads. Two current leads go on the outside, two potential leads go on the inside, closer to the contact. This four-wire Kelvin arrangement keeps the resistance of the leads out of the measurement.
- Inject the test current. The micro-ohmmeter passes a DC current through the contact. A test current of at least 100 A is commonly specified for high-voltage breakers, and higher currents are used where the standard or the manufacturer asks for it.
- Read and record. The instrument shows the resistance directly in micro-ohms. Each phase is tested and recorded separately.
- Compare. The value is checked against the manufacturer’s figure, against the commissioning baseline and against the other two phases.
- Restore. Leads are removed, earths are put back and the equipment is handed over.
What counts as an acceptable value?
There is no single number that fits every breaker. The reference value is always the one printed in the manufacturer’s test certificate or manual, because it depends on the contact design, the rated current and the voltage class. What engineers look at in practice is the comparison, not the raw figure.

A high reading does not automatically mean a bad breaker. Loose leads, a partially closed contact, an earth left connected or a dirty terminal will all inflate the number. Good practice is to clean the connection points, repeat the test, and only then plan an overhaul.
